Variables

Each subject has its characteristics called variables. Here are some examples for subject, variable and its value:

Subject (Who?) Variable (What?) Value
human gender male
player height (in cm) 186
customer place of living Kosice
car brand Audi

The ultimate goal of every research is finding relations between variables. Two or more variables are related if in a sample of observations, the values of those variables are distributed in a consistent manner. In other words, variables are related if their values systematically correspond to each other for these observations. For example Height is related to Weight because typically tall individuals are heavier than short ones.

Variables differ in many respects, most notably in the role they are given in our research and in the measurement type that can be applied to them.
